Now is the time to do your theory
A 16-week theory course
for both Day Skipper and
Yacht Master gets underway
this month by Tim Griffin
of Griffin Marine Services.
They are ideal for those
who wish to improve their
skills on the water this
winter, without actually
being out on it.
The courses are to be
held from 6.30 to 9.30 in
the evening, with the Day
Skipper course teaching the
skills of basic navigation
for trips undertaken by day
around the Solent and as
far as Poole and Weymouth.
The Yacht Master course,
according to Tim, is more
ambitious, and takes in the
likes of cross-Channel trips,
the ‘rules of the road’, chart
work with RYA Electronic
66
Charts, Books and
navigation through Practice
Navigation Tables.
Other practical courses
including those for RIBs
and motor cruisers will also
continue throughout the
winter months by Griffin
Marine Services, enabling
sailors of all capabilities to
brush up on their skills and
be ready to set sail in the
spring.

The racing fleet was split into two groups. The White Group
included International 6 Metres, International Dragons,
Folkboat, X One Design (XOD) and Yarmouth One Design
(YOD) starting from a line inshore off Yarmouth Green, east
of the RSYC clubhouse.
The Black Group with IRC 1, IRC 2, Swan Classic Class,
Classic Cruisers and, for the first time at the regatta, a class
specifically for Old Gaffers, started from a line just further
offshore.
The first race illustrated how intense the competition
