The St James’s Clinic is approaching its first anniversary, and everything seems to be going to plan. “It’s my baby. I dreamed it up, and we designed it,” says Rebecca, indicating the clean whiter than white consulting rooms, augmented with glass and chrome. Dr Gautier’s reputation as a cosmetic dentist enabled the couple to attract the most skilled practitioners to complement his own work. Dr Michael Cadier, consultant plastic surgeon works on faces, breasts, indeed any part its owner feels needs a makeover; Dr John Makunde, consultant urologist specialises in erectile dysfunction and is available for consultation; and Orchard Cosmetic Skin Centre’s Dr Maire Rhatigan is now based in a gleaming spacious consulting room there. “In the next phase of our project we are planning to offer Well Man and Well Woman screening, and corporate stress management classes,” says Rebecca. The practise has consulting room space for other practitioners, so the services available are set to increase. The dental practice itself has, within the year, gained 700 patients. Many are drawn to its cutting-edge techniques, such as zoom whitening. Equipment such as the cerec machine enables crowns to be made and fitted within an hour and a half. An oral cancer probe offers instant reassurance or early diagnosis. But Rebecca, an NHS nurse, believes it is Jacques’s gentle reassuring manor and attention to detail in the more day-to-day dental treatments such as fillings which gives him the edge. “He’s got a reputation for dealing with nervous patients,” she says. “And if children – who get free check-ups if they come with an adult – are scared, he just lets them get used to the surgery till they’re ready.” Somehow it isn’t surprising to hear patients are starting to come from the mainland to the St James’s Practice. “It’s the Island’s very own Harley Street,” says Rebecca.
