TRAINING HORSES with Robert Booth BHSI

As we have been developing a small breeding programme with our own stallion and a couple of brood mares , we are now getting to the stage of having to sell some of the youngstock .
Selling horses is never easy - especially home-bred ones - and finding the right homes for them is very important to us . Beryl is the one we have had to sell this year : she is out of Bunty Girl , our chief brood mare , and like all of the foals , was conceived by artificial insemination – in her case , by the international show jumper Billy Congo . Beryl is also the dam of one of last year ’ s lovely foals by our stallion CanCan , carrying on some
interesting blood lines . Beryl is a little too small for me to produce and compete , so after weaning her foal , she was backed and brought into work before passing on to Samantha Brown , someone we have known for many years through her past horses and lessons . After backing , Sam has kept
her with us to get to know her , have some schooling and lessons , and build a partnership with her . Beryl has inherited her dam ’ s try hard , willing ride ability and she is turning into the most perfect private-owner horse . She is more than capable in doing what Sam wants to do , some dressage , jumping , eventing and general riding activities . She is also the softest , sweetest horse to look after so what a pleasure it is to see one of our lovely home-bred horses finding a caring , suitable forever home . I look forward to see them progress and wish them both good luck for the future . Robert Booth is an equine trainer for Rodgebrook Horses . Training your horse : Lungeing

The first thing nearly every horse has to learn in their riding education is to lunge . It is used for interacting with a person / trainer through voice and body language , introducing tack , accepting rein contact with side reins , or just exercising . When you first start teaching the horse to lunge , fence off about a 15 metre square of the arena with something that he will respect , to prevent him from escaping or pulling away , and to keep him on the circle . He will very quickly learn to accept the lunge line and respond to your commands before you progress on to a bigger arena .
