iversity is a mainstay in the life of a saleroom,
and whilst at Hose Rhodes Dickson we are used
to handling all ends of the auction spectrum, 2016
is developing into possibly our most varied year of
sales yet. A recent house clearance job uncovered a
jewellery cabinet masquerading as a cheval mirror,
which was overflowing with nine carat gold rings,
necklaces and bracelets. This in turn led to a record
breaking auction with over 300 lots of jewellery
alone. From small and portable we transition to rather
bulkier items in the form of farm machinery and the
like, as we prepare for our first major outdoor auction
in August. We are now accepting entries, so if you
think you have anything which might be suitable we
will be happy to advise you.
Hose Rhodes Dickson
key area for the modern
collector is the arena
of vintage watches,
and whilst the collection of
timepieces is far from a recent
enthusiasm, there was a
time in the recent past when
wristwatches themselves were
not at all collectable. The
specialist auctions held by larger
salerooms and devoted solely
to the sale of watches were
unheard of prior to the mid1970s, with only pocket watches
featuring in an auctioneer’s
catalogue alongside their larger
clock cousins. Following the
foundation of a specialist watch
and clock auction house by
Italian Osvaldo Patrizzi in 1974
the market took off; at a time
when the market was dominated
by quartz movements, it seems
the nostalgia and workmanship
of the mechanical watch chimed
a chord with a new field of
collectors.
Amongst the thousands of
watch makers, at the zenith
without a doubt is Patek
Philippe. Anyone wishing to
purchase a new watch from
them will have to join a waiting
list, but that is not to say
acquiring a vintage model is
any easier. With the company
itself buying up swathes of the
vintage market to populate its
museum, any model appearing
at auction is certain to fetch a
headline price. Hot on their
heels in terms of collectability
is Rolex, whilst Omega,
Breitling, Panerai, Cartier and
Rado are all amongst the elite
manufacturers creating a buzz
at auction. At Hose Rhodes
Dickson Auction Rooms we
regularly sell a wide spectrum of
watches, catering to all budgets
and tastes, with a recent
highlight being a number of
vintage Rolex watches which all
exceeded expectations.
