Check out our website visitilife.com CONTENTS ISLAND LIFE JUNE / JULY 2016 A WORD FROM THE EDITOR Summer’s well and truly on its way, and for Islanders and visitors that means the usual busy round of open-air events, festivals and fairs – not to mention our wealth of beaches, woodlands and downs, all offering some great walking and picnicking opportunities. If you want to know how our ancestors welcomed Midsummer’s Day, then turn to our folklore feature, and see if you can figure out where old Will Shakespeare found the inspiration for one of his most famous plays. We also have some great local characters for you to read about in this issue, including Seaview’s well-known resident historian and passionate genealogist Will Caws, whose forbears literally founded the village. There’s also Keith Jacobs, whose family has run the Hinks & Sons beach-based hire business at Lake for almost a century. Still active in the family firm at 70, he tells of the health scare that helped him put his life into perspective – and keep doing what he loves best. At the younger end of the scale, we chat to Karla Ducker, a woman with a passion for luxury goods, about her fascinating role with an old-established jeweller’s in Southampton. Much as she loves her job, though, she insists she will carry on commuting so she can continue living on the Island that she regards as her true home. So, sit back somewhere shady, with a long cool drink, and enjoy these interviews along with all your usual favourite features and fabulous photos of events across the Island.
