T
he popular Fisherman’s Cottage,
situated right next to the beach at
the far end of Shanklin Esplanade,
is opening with extended hours this
summer, following a race against time to
get the pub up and running for the new
season.
No one could have envisaged the
devastation caused last Christmas Eve
when water from the adjacent Shanklin
Chine burst through the back door of the
Fisherman’s Cottage and left the premises
under several feet of water. The force was
so great as the water gushed through
the kitchen to the bar lounge, that some
furniture was even washed down the
beach.
But after months of repairs and
refurbishment the Fisherman’s Cottage is
back in business again, and this summer
it will open from 11am until late with
meals served from 12noon until 8pm.
The Fisherman’s Cottage’s interior walls
were taken back to the stonework to begin
repairs, and it has a new bar and new
furniture. But thankfully the historic
pictures that hang on the walls were not
damaged, allowing the pub to maintain
its traditional atmosphere.
Managers Callum Phipps and Matt Rolle
welcome new and regular customers
to sample the real ales, that will always
include two brewed on the Island, as well
as an extensive range of lagers, wines,
spirits and soft drinks. There are some
new additions to the menu, including red
Thai salmon curry and pork tenderloin,
and light bites include sandwiches and
baguettes, and there will also be a daily
specials board.
