ISLAND LIFE MAGAZINE Chale goes festive Chale Festival will be held on June 29 on the village green opposite Chale Green Stores. All money raised by the event will go towards projects in the village to support the local community, and Chale Green Stores will be offering a meal for two in the cafe as a raffle prize. The Festival will include the Oyster Girls Morris dancers; various musical entertainers; the Harley Davidson Motorcycle Club and Isle of Wight Austin, and plenty of old classic children’s games, as well as face painting. Arreton open their gardens and hearts A total of 11 gardens will be opened in Arreton on Sunday June 22 between 11am and 5pm to raise money for the Scouts and Relate on the Island. There are several large gardens, no longer normally open to the public, including Arreton Manor (open 12-4pm only), The Old Vicarage and Haseley Manor along with some delightful cottage gardens. Parking is free. A programme to cover all the gardens can be bought at the shop or any of the gardens, for £3.50, and children are free. Relate is a couple counselling service which helps couples to stay together or part amicably , whichever the couple wants, with great benefits to their children if involved, and housing, health and education. There are 1,000 young scouts distributed across the Island. Corf is the Island Scout Camp next to the Newtown Nature Reserve. It is in the process of a major rebuild replacing old and very decrepit buildings, bringing it up to date for scouts to enjoy. Tel: Vivian on 865420 for further information. A welcome at Open Studios During the last two weekends of July Island artists will welcome art-lovers to their Open Studios, enabling visitors to enjoy a wealth of talent. This year there are over 130 exhibitors, including over 25 new artists. The range includes sculptors, a wood-turner, photographers, artists who create puppets and models, painters in abstract and realistic styles, potters and ceramicists, mixedmedia artists, driftwood and fabric art. Established favourites include Charlotte Hodge Thomas, Jo Hummel-Newell, Becky Samuelson, Lisa Traxler, Maria Ward and Tony Westmore. Between July 18 and 21 follow art trails in Newport, Cowes, Yarmouth, Freshwater, Niton and the surrounding areas. The focus moves to Ryde, Bembridge, Sandown / Shanklin, and Ventnor between July 25 sand 28. Exhibitors are listed on the Isle of Wight Arts website, found at www.isleofwightarts.com and in the 2014 Open Studios Yearbook, which includes art trail maps and postcodes. County Show ready to go! The Royal Isle of Wight County Show will be held on June 28 at the County Showground, Northwood, from 9.30am to 5pm. Admission is adults £7, and under 16s free when accompanied by an adult. The official opening will be performed at 11am by Maj. Gen Martin White, the Isle of Wight Lord Lieutenant, and the Island’s High Sheriff, Claire Locke. The livestock section has been included this year to include beef and dairy cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry.
