The ‘you deserve an expert’ guide to successful salon selection

Looking for a new salon and stylist
can sometimes be challenging
territory, even if you are a confident
‘people person’ and great at
networking, finding someone who
understands you and the needs of
your hair can be challenging. So to
put you on the path to finding the
perfect salon and stylist, here are
some helpful tips:
Researching any salon is often
the best place to start. A website
can be very helpful, revealing both
the salon DNA and the style of
work that they produce and pricing
structure. Further that with a cold
call to speak with a receptionist or
member of staff.
Some clients report that they
always start with friends and family,
I’m sure there’s someone close to
you who has hair that you admire.
The cut or colour doesn’t have to
reflect your personal style, but there
should be something about it that

you really like; don’t be afraid to
ask who their stylist is.
Once you have made your
selection, a contact with the
salon to book a complimentary
consultation with a selected stylist
is strongly advisable. Share with
the salon what you are looking to
achieve as sometimes salons can
have specialists in certain areas of
cutting and colouring.
Consultations are an essential
communication and an opportunity
to view how the stylists interact
with their clients from a new guest
vantage point. Do they display
strong listening skills? Are they
giving the clients what they want?
What services and promotions are
on offer? What products do they
use and recommend? Is continued
training a part of salon life? Be
prepared, realistic and open to
ideas, and be honest about any past
hair traumas.
