Local organisations join forces for
disadvantaged young people
Joining forces with the Isle of Wight
Community Partnership, the Hampshire and
Isle of Wight Constabulary, Vestas Technology
UK and Employee Volunteering, Cowes-based
charity and leading maritime training
provider UKSA has created and launched an
inspirational pilot project for young people
on the Island.
The new project helps young people
develop essential skills for life, through
structured residential sailing and watersports
activities, coaching and mentoring, as well as
helping to introduce each young person to
healthy leisure activity through local clubs. A
key element of the programme is access to,
and support from, 12 Vestas employees, who
will coach and support the young people
throughout the duration of the programme.
20 young people from the Isle of Wight
90
have initially been selected to benefit from
the pilot project, which if successful will
be offered nationwide to provide help and
support to other young people from across
the UK.
In addition to the significant benefits
and opportunities for the young people
taking part, the programme also provides
a key leadership training benefit for Vestas
managers. Each of the 12 employees
volunteering will participate in a 6-month
supported professional workplace coaching
and mentoring programme delivered by
Employee Volunteering Community interest
Company (CiC).
Jon Ely, Chief Executive at UKSA,
commented: “This is a really exciting
project that truly has the potential to make
a difference to many young people’s lives.
