SUMMER IS EASY PICKINGS FOR BURGLARS, SO BEWARE!
Finally the warmer weather has
arrived, and we are all looking
forward to a few months of summer
sun, cool breezes, balmy evenings in
the garden with a glass of wine and
a few friends. This issue Mark Lee –
Director of Lifeline Alarm Systems Ltd
considers the key security issues to be
aware of so we do not let our guard
down this summer.
During these next few months we
will all no doubt be enjoying the
increased temperatures. This will
naturally lead us to open our doors
and windows to let in the summer
and fresh air, but please be aware of
the potential pitfalls. This time of year
however, provides excellent occasion
for opportunist thieves.
While we enjoy the time in the
garden, the opportunist will be
attracted to easy pickings through
unlocked doors, open windows and
deserted houses. To keep secure this
summer here’s a few basic tips.
• Make sure you keep doors locked
even if you are at home, and suitable
window locks are also available.
• Keep valuables such as handbags,
car & house keys, laptops and phones
out of sight from public view and well
away from easy reach.
• If you have gates, keep them
closed and define your definite
boundaries.
• You may consider early warning
devices to alert you of presence on
your property.
• You could also have your intruder
alarm chime if a door is opened.
For further specific advice please
contact your local Crime Prevention
Officer on 08450 454545 or contact
Lifeline for advice on electronic
security and gate systems.
What ever your personal situation
however, please take extra care
throughout the summer period and be
aware of what is known as ‘walk –in’
burglaries. During the years 2008/9
over 60% of domestic burglaries on
the Isle of Wight could be assigned
to insecure premises, or doors and
windows left open.
