New farm shop opens
Jackie and Todd Carder, farmers
and proprietors of Wight
Aberdeen Angus, have opened
their own farm shop – and are
keen to explode the myth that
farm shops are pricier than
mainstream shops:
“Don’t be fooled by the offers
in the supermarket,” says Jackie.
“Just because it says ‘2 for
£2.50’ it doesn’t necessarily
mean it’s a good deal.”
She has been comparing the
eye-catching red labelled offers
on packs of minced beef with
the price of their own Aberdeen
Angus mince. And guess what,
hers is cheaper. “You need to
look at the price per kilogram,”
she explains. Given that their
meat is hung for three weeks,
developing flavour and reducing
the weighty superfluous liquid
that we pay for in standard
shops, her meat is also better
value.
Stocking the acclaimed names
from the Island’s producers –
Calbourne Classics ice cream,
bread from Freshwater bakery,
oil from Oil of Wight, and of
course local fruit and veg in
season, the shop is bulging
with the sort of dewy freshness
that supermarkets can’t hack,
however hard they try.
