Ploughing ahead for the Earl
Mountbatten Hospice
The Isle of Wight Traction Engine Club held
a Memorial Ploughing Match at Mottistone
Manor Farm by kind permission of Todd and
Jackie Carder on Sunday 5th April 2009.
This was the first match which is set to
become an annual event. It was organised
to remember four members who sadly all
passed away in 2008. The four members
were Stephen Hayles, John Attrill, Derek
Young and Den Phillips.
The 46 plo ughmen all paid a minimum
donation of £5, further money was given by
sponsors of the event, donations on the gate
and a raffle and a total to date of £2050 has
Geoff Hughes & Stuart Rose
68
been raised in aid of the Earl Mountbatten
Hospice.
Karen Sheath said "the ploughing match
idea was originally thought up to remember
Steve, who was himself a keen ploughman.
The passing away of three further
ploughmen changed our ideas slightly and
we decided to have one match to remember
them all. We couldn’t have asked for better
weather and everyone seemed to have a
great time. It was a great social event where
everyone could get together and share some
memories about some much loved people.
To raise over £2000 for the Hospice was
just an added
bonus and far
exceeded my
expectations".
The prizes
were presented
by Geoffrey
Hughes.
