EQUESTRIAN - Sponsored by Brickfields and Froghill Tack life Sun shines on the Island's answer to Aintree. Crowds turned out to enjoy a sunny spring day at the Isle of Wight Grand National and Ashey Scurry, an event held annually in April on the Island's original race course in Ashey, and sponsored by Estate Agents, Creasey Biles and King. Even the steam train made its annual 'unscheduled' stop at Ashey Halt, disgorging its passengers who streamed across the race course towards the tea tent and the runner's paddock. Isle of Wight Hunt Scurry committee manages this popular event which, among its five classes, includes some for the junior riders as well as the infamous Grand National itself. Twice round a challenging course, built by Harold George and Barry Elliott, over Alan Aylett's big hedges and including an open water ditch, it requires a seriously fit horse to compete the CBK Grand National in style, but, for the young thrusters, once round was quite enough. Winners were:- Puffing Billy Stakes - Rebecca Winter with Midnight Super Star, Junior Ashey Fun Stakes - Lily Blacksell with Finnochio, Ashey Maiden Stakes - Karen Begley with Delta, F H Winter Ashey Scurry - Izzy Brown with George, and winner of the Isle of Wight CBK Grand National was Sophie Sheldon and Shalcombe Skyline. www.wightfrog.com/islandlife 81
