sauces, salads and curries, and are
easier on the pocket too, especially
when grown from seed. Look out
for them when you are next at a
garden centre, select four or five of
your favourites (I find coriander,
chives, flat-leaved parsley, mint,
and basil invaluable) and grow in
a large, attractive container by
the back door or even in hanging
baskets or window boxes. Regular
snipping will keep them healthy
and bushy and as long as the
aspect is sunny and the compost
free draining, they’ll be happy.
Feed once a week in the summer
with a liquid seaweed fertiliser.
For something a little different,
keep an eye out for the host of
unusual mints available such as
banana, chocolate or pineapple
– crush the leaves to release their
