Jonathan
Wright
Local Artist
Throughout the summer, and at
several venues, you will be able to
view the extraordinary paintings
of Jonathan Wright. It has been a
long time since a series of paintings
with such energy, movement and
meticulous detail in them have
been shown on the Island. If you
have an interest in any kind of
boats and the sea, thoroughbreds,
racing and paintings, then you
must not miss these shows.
Wright, a newcomer to this Island,
has specialised in thoroughbred
portraiture and is a member of
the Society of Equestrian Artists,
but has for the last six months
concentrated on a series of marine
paintings. He initially trained as a
draughtsman and then Fine Arts
& Anatomy at Oxford University;
82
the combination of
these two elements
naturally led him to
the study of horses.
He says “with keen
observation and precise
draughtsmanship, it is
almost automatic that
you will capture the
nature of the subject,
whether it be a racing
yacht in the teeth
of a gale in the South Atlantic, a
racehorse jumping a fence in the
National or a hibiscus in a garden in
Thailand. Because a lot of my work
comes from commissions it takes
me a while to accumulate enough
work to have an exhibition, so this
show is quite unusual for me. But
I often prefer commissioned work
because it not only gives me a
wide and eclectic range of subject,
but it gives the client a unique
statement about themselves.”
And if you are in Newport,
look in at St Thomas’ Jewellers,
St Thomas’ Square, where an
example of Jonathan’s work
is permanently on display.
