What is
Hydrotherapy?
The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians,
Turks and Japanese were the
first to realise the therapeutic
qualities of warm water therapy.
The ancient Thermal spas used
water from natural hot springs
- the idea behind the modern
Hot Tub and Spa.
What’s the difference between
a Hot Tub and Spa? A Hot Tub is
a free standing wooden structure
which has evolved to include the
same features found in a spa, for
example seating, jets and filters.
A Spa is usually made of moulded
fibreglass or has a thermoplastic
shell; it requires a supporting
structure and can be portable so is
suitable for indoor or outdoor use.
Hydrotherapy is one of the
62
many therapeutic benefits a spa
has to offer and consists of heat,
buoyancy and massage. When the
body is under water, it becomes
buoyant which relieves pressure
on the joints in the body. Warm
water and direct pressure aimed
at trigger points release natural
muscle relaxers, called endorphins,
into the body. Increased blood
flow to the affected muscle
groups carries vital nutrients that
assist the body to recover more
quickly. The bubbles from the jets
have a massaging effect which
assist in relieving muscle soreness
and stiffness. Not only does the
spa reduce stress and relax tired
muscles it can also help induce a
restful sleep.
Arthritis sufferers can also benefit
from the use of hydrotherapy. The
soothing warmth and buoyancy
of the water provide an ideal
environment for relieving pain.
Hydrotherapy
also
stimulates
circulation, the immune system,
and brings a general sense of well
being.
The Swim Spa is an exercise pool
with a powerful counter-current
that allows water resistance from
all directions offering a challenging
workout even for the strongest
swimmer.
