A celebration
of livestock
Over 80 members of the farming
community came together at the New
Holmwood Hotel, on the 20th January, for
the annual Gilten Market Dinner.
The evening was a celebration of livestock farming on the
Island and culminated in the presentation of the awards
from the 2017 Gilten Market, which had been held at the
end of November at Lake Farm.
The awards were presented by the High Sheriff, under
the stewardship of Mr Iain Soutar, of Southern Counties
Auctioneers. In the speeches, the High Sheriff proposed
a toast to the Market and Mr Laurie Calloway responded,
taking the opportunity to thank the supporters of the
market for keeping the event very much alive, remaining
a key event in the farming calendar. It is only through the
generous sponsorship of local firms, together with an
excellent contin gent of buyers from both the Island and
mainland that allows the event to be the great success
that it is. To see so much support from both the cattle and
sheep producers, with the very high standard of stock on
show, is a real credit to the farming community.
