A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve is an area of international importance to nature conservation . The core aim is to use science to improve relationships between people and their local environments . IW AONB has been working to outline a possible Biosphere Reserve for the Isle of Wight . Excited by the potential for both nature conservation and community action , IW AONB will be developing a bid to win UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status for the whole Isle of Wight . The main aim for the Island ’ s Biosphere reserve is to promote sustainable development within the natural , farmed , built and coastal environments of the Isle of Wight , by involving as many people as possible . www . wightaonb . org . uk
Annual Hedge-laying competition
This years ‘ IW Hedge-laying Competition ’ is back at New Barn Farm , Calbourne , by kind permission of Mr . & Mrs . Chris Spence . Competitors will be battling it out in three categories , Open , Novice and Team . There will also be a display of static engines and vehicles from Vectis Vintage Tractors and Engines Club , and Ralph Griffins hand tools . Warm clothing and stout boots are the order of the day , as it can get very cold and heavy under foot . Help is on hand in the marquee with hot drinks and food being available courtesy of the ‘ Calbourne Ladies ’. For more information ; www . iwhg . org
Pan Mill Meadows
We have now completed all the major works at Pan Mill Meadows . With the removal of the trees by the Matalan roundabout it has exposed the site , not just physically , but also to those people who hadn ’ t realised such a special area was so close . We are now keen to see it develop over the coming months . Interpretation boards have been erected to give you a little history of this new Nature Reserve .
Hedge-laying supper
Gift to Nature are holding a Hedge-layers ’ Supper , to raise funds for hedge-laying training . A delicious , rural-inspired menu , has been especially created . Tickets are priced £ 25 per head .
