I
tems once deemed to be ‘function over form’ are
currently enjoying their moment in the limelight with
the growing popularity of industrial antiques. This
is a term coined relatively recently to describe the vast
array of pieces which, whilst practical, robust and built to
last, would have often been overlooked in favour of their
seemingly more attractive cousins. The tools, equipment
and furnishings of tradesmen and factories, designed to
perform a specific function, such pieces have survived
decades of heavy use and are no worse the wear for it.
We are talking about Anglepoise lamps, enamelled light
fittings, utilitarian stools, workbenches; the list goes on.
The tide has turned and these previously useful but
unpopular items are now commanding premium prices at
auction and are keenly sought after by private buyers and
dealers alike. At Hose Rhodes Dickson Auction Rooms we
have recently sold a pair of Benjamin Saaflux industrial
ceiling lights at a figure well in excess of their guide price.
Other items with strong interior design appeal include
vintage filing cabinets, blacksmith’s bellows, enamel
signs and even articles of school PE equipment, such as a
pommel horse.

he New Year got off to a flying start at Hose Rhodes
Dickson Auction Rooms, with record attendance
for our first modern and
vintage sale of the year. By
holding these auctions
on a Saturday, and with
viewing open until late
on the preceding Friday,
we ensure that they are
accessible for as many
people as possible, and
the January sale saw many
new clients registering to bid.
More buyers leads to increased
competition, with the ensuing benefit of enhanced
prices for our vendors. While we are still a long way
from the heyday, we are pleased to report that the turn
of the year has definitely brought an upturn in the level
of interest and achieved hammer prices for furniture,
including some of the ‘brown’ pieces.
