On the right lines
T
eaching is a big part of my daily work, and
encouraging riders to take their riding along
the right lines is part of my job. Keeping up
with training programmes for riders to pursue, I have
to keep in touch with the growing structures that the
organisations are offering.
Attending the BS coaching conference in December
gave me a chance to keep up to date on training
methods and ways to help riders achieve their goals.
Many of the trainers attending were well-known
names and it is always good to hear their experiences
and input. All horses and riders are different but what
is clear that as a trainer you have to have a proven
system.
There are no short cuts or magic bits to turn you
into an Olympic rider; it is down to hard work and
understanding. The sport is changing all the time and
the goals harder to reach. But using the right system,
there are many opportunities out there from junior
academies, young rider apprenticeships and young
horse producing, many of them lottery funded.
Being on the Island has its restrictions but there
are some talented young riders and horses that
with planning and help could go on to bigger
things, and using these platforms as well as show
results could get you noticed by the right people
and selectors. They are always looking for riders
coming through the right training system with
talent to improve and continue with other horses.
We should be trying to look at the bigger picture
at the same time using and supporting our local
shows and trainers.
Useful tips on
training your horse
T
here are many trainer
qualifications out there, but a
good trainer should have experience
and knowledge of all aspects of
training as the disciplines often
overlap i.e. flatwork is very important
for control for jumping and pole work
and gymnastic jumping will improve
impulsion and step. A good clienttrainer relationship is required for you
to trust your instructor to influence
your way to your goal
