Hyundai i20
Driven on the Island by Peter White
When test driving some new cars, I
genuinely believe they have become
too complicated for their own good. So
it was somewhat refreshing to take out
the new Hyundai i20 and discover it
has all the qualities and accessories any
driver could wish for - but without the
unnecessary frills.
Although the i20 has had a few
facelifts since it was first launched, the
New Generation i20 is genuinely a new
design - slightly larger, sleeker and more
spacious on the inside. But what I really
liked about it was the fact it is so easy to
come to terms with the add-ons, and it

is a pleasure to drive, even in towns and
on the Island’s somewhat narrow roads.
For those Hyundai drivers on the Island
looking to upgrade, then the i20 is the
obvious choice.
I drove the top-of-the-range 1.4
Premium SE, a five-speed manual,
petrol driven, with heated front seats,
heated steering wheel, front and rear
parking sensors, and electric sunroof
with panoramic glass. The five-door i20
is compact, comfortable, starts at the
turn of a key, has an annual road tax of
just £110, and has combined figures in
excess of 50 mpg.
The i20 also has a smart phone docking
station, so if you need to use your mobile
while on the move it is available. In all
honesty, what more do you require unless
you are planning on driving halfway up
the mainland every weekend?
There are six different new i20 models
to choose from, with the entry level 1.2 S
costing just £10,695 OTR.
The Premium SE I drove, courtesy of
Wight Motors, College Close, Sandown,
comes in at £15,820, which still
represents excellent vale for money
in today’s market. There has been a
huge amount of interest in the new i20
since its launch in late January, and that
interest is sure to grow among Islanders
in the months ahead.
