Ford Mondeo
Driven on the Island by Peter White
There has been eager anticipation in
the motor trade surrounding the arrival
of the all-new Ford Mondeo, and few
will disagree that it has been well worth
the wait. This state-of-the art car has
everything a motorist could wish for, so
it’s not surprising it will be aimed at a
global market.
It arrived on the Island recently at
Premier Ford, Riverway, Newport, and I
found it an absolute delight to test drive.
From the outside its eye-catching shape
has a real presence, and once inside the
stylish cabin I experienced a feeling of
excitement, and a real desire to put it

through its paces.
It did not disappoint. Although the ride
is fairly firm, its plush seats provided
exceptional comfort. And it has all the
refinements that make driving it a joy. The
1.6 diesel six-speed manual I drove, which
comes in at £21,795 OTR, responded
effortlessly to all my demands, and I’m
sure that can be said for the whole range
- saloon, hatchback or estate; petrol
or diesel; manual or auto, and even an
advanced Hybrid Electric vehicle, the first
to be manufactured by Ford in Europe.
The only thing the vehicle has retained
from its predecessor is the name ‘Mondeo’.

Other than that it is a completely new car,
from the tip of its imposing front grille
through to its tail lights.
It has a full complement of driving aids
including an easy-to-operate audio and
communications system. And as well as
parallel parking, the new Mondeo’s Active
Park Assist also carries out perpendicular
parking enabling you to sit back and
marvel while it parks itself in that tight
High Street space or in a multi-storey car
park. It also has a system that will warn of
vehicles coming towards you as you are
reversing out of a space.
Add on all its other accessories,
necessities and luxuries, and the all-new
Mondeo can’t help but be a winner - not
just here on the Island, but worldwide.
