West Wight fun and food
S
everal hundred primary school
children combined a five-a-side
football tournament with healthy
eating at an event staged at the West Wight
Sports Centre, Freshwater.
A total of 18 teams from six different
primary schools in West Wight took part
in the tournament which was part of
Farmhouse Breakfast Week, and organised
by Graham Biss, CEO of Natural Enterprise
and Vice-Chairman of the Agricultural
Society. But it did not stop at just football,
as the youngsters were treated to a close-up
look at some tractors that were parked in the
Centre car park, and real live chickens that
were indoors. The event was also supported
by the local NFU, Isle of Wight Poultry
Club, Freshwater Library and Quarr Abbey
beekeepers.
The NFU also sponsored the food which
was supplied by Briddlesford Lodge Farm
Shop, and produced by Isle of Wight farmers.
The Farm Shop made 300 breakfast baps
for the youngsters who participated, as well
as other children who were at the Centre
having swimming lessons.
Brighstone Primary School won the girls’
five-a-side tournament and the boys’ event
was won by Yarmouth Primary School. Clare
Griffin, manager of the West Wight Sports
Centre, said: “It proved a very successful day,
with all the children enjoying taking part,
and having their breakfast bap.”
