Laurie Calloway achieved 162p, and the
lamb trade was exceptional with host Matt
Legge’s pair of Continental taking the
Championship and selling at 287p per
kilo.
The Gilten Market has been staged for
nearly 150 years, moving to Brickfields
when Newport Market closed in the
mid-1980s. Although Brickfields is now
up for sale, Matt Legge has promised
the Market will be held there for as long
as his family remain the owners, and he
hopes that new buyers would continue
the tradition. However, if that were not
to be the case, then Matt is confident an
alternative venue would be found.
