COUNTRY LIFE Gilten market 74 record www.visitislandlife.com The record price for the Gilten Beast was again achieved when the annual Gilten Market was staged at Brickfields. The 460 kilo Limousin x heifer owned by Mick Denness from Borthwood was sold for £1,909 – representing 415p per kilo. By tradition, the High Sheriff of the Island, Nick Hayward gilded the Champion at the Market, which attracted a good crowd, and tremendous returns. The Reserve Champion, also owned by Mick Denness fetched 255p per kilo, while the Best Island Bred animal, a British Blue heifer from Christine Holiday and Suzy Rickard made 275p per kilo. Ron Holland’s first prize pair of Unhandled Steers were split between Steve Doe, Island Foods and Will Newman at 285p per kilo each.
