GARDENING
aswell as onion sets, garlic bulbs and
asparagus crowns. We also have a
large selection of fresh grown herbs.
Summer flowering bulbs are now
available, including begonias, gladioli,
canna, regale lilies, and dahlia tubers.
These can be potted up in March in a
frost-free greenhouse and planted up
outside in late April or early May.
“Spring pruning is best left until
March, for perennials once the new
growth is established, and also roses,
summer flowering shrubs and grasses.
Do not prun spring flowering shrubs.
Weed as necessary and mulch to give
extra goodness to the soil, and protect
new growth from slugs.
“If the weather is suitable do the
first cut of your lawn, but have the
blades set high. Spring lawn feed and
weed will promote healthy growth and
colour.
“At Thompson’s we want to
encourage new gardeners who need
advice or experienced gardeners
wanting to expand their plant
knowledge. So as well as continuing
our Nursery walk rounds, guided tours
of our three nurseries and meeting
the growers, there will be talks at our
Garden Club evening, Wednesday
March 14. Why not bring a friend to
join on the night? Membership is free
and there is a 10% discount on the
evening. Come and visit us soon.”
