SOCIAL SCENE Gilten dinner The annual Gilten Market dinner, incorporating the prize giving and awards ceremony, was held at the New Holmwood Hotel, and attracted a capacity audience. Colin Pontin came over from the mainland to be guest speaker, and engaged himself in some excellent banter with local farmers. The Mark Newman Memorial Trophy was presented by his two daughters and son to Andy Gustar, who purchased the Gilten Beast. The Island’s High Sheriff, Susie Sheldon proposed the toast to the Gilten Market, and proceeds from the evening went to the High Sheriff ’s Trust. A copy of a poster for the first Gilten Market in 1861 was auctioned and raised £150. www.visitislandlife.com 87
