Michael Holliday
remembered at
Gilten Dinner
Livestock exhibitors and friends gathered together for the
annual dinner to celebrate another great year of the Gilten
Market. Diners were treated to a four course beef dinner at
Brickfields, before receiving a tribute to the market from the
High Sheriff, Peter Kingston, and a witty response from the
Gilten Market Chairman, Laurie Calloway.
Kerry Gustar paid tribute to Michael Holliday, following the
sad news of his passing earlier in the week. Michael, together
with his daughter Susan, had been a regular supporter of the
market and dinner for many years and he will be sadly missed
by all.
Iain Soutar, of Southern Counties Auctioneers, announced
the prize winners with Mr Kingston presenting the silver
ware.
Brothers, Hugh and Charlie Calloway, picked up the
Brickfields Cup, for the Champion Beast, The Gilten Market
Cup, for the best Handled Steer and the National Westminster
Cup for the best Exhibit by a Young Farmer.
Amongst the regular supporters, Mick Denness, picked up
a haul of four trophies, having presented a fantastic line up
of seven finished beasts. His awards included the Phil Legge
Memorial Cup, presented by Phil’s son Matt, for the best
overall entry in the market.
Suzy Rickard’s trophies were picked up by her friends,
Kerry Gustar and John Harris. Suzy’s awards were the Alfred
Newman Goblet, for the best Island Born beast and the new
Macchina Cup for the best Native Bred beast.
Robert Lovegrove picked up the Darken Cup for the best
unhandled Heifer, Jon Cheek collected the H F George &
Son cup for the best Barren Cow, Richard Salter took home
the SCATS Cup for the best pen of store steers and Michael
Jenkins took the Alfred Newman Cup for the best pen of
Store Heifers.
Eve Ablitt picked up the Ross Stark memorial cup for the
best pair of unhandled beasts. In the sheep section, Matt
Legge took the Arthur Cheek Memorial Cup, for the second
year running, for the best pair of butchers’ lambs.
