a complete guide to
Cemetery idea
comes alive…
The Footprint Trust launched
its Cemetery Warden scheme
over a year ago and to-date
17, keen local people have
been trained. Those wishing
to learn and become a
Cemetery Warden should
have an interest in nature
conservation, the landscape,
heritage and the community
– and the scheme brings
together these diverse
concerns. There will be an
open evening to promote the
initiative at The Parish Hall,
Victoria Road, Freshwater
on Friday April 8 at 7pm.
All those who have already
expressed an interest are
invited along with an open
invitation to other would-be
recruits. Ray Harrington-Vail
of the Trust says “Cemetery
Wardens act as ambassadors
for burial grounds, seeking to
inform, educate and involve
the local community and
working with the owners of
the site. They will work with
other interested individuals
and groups to assist in
looking after the local burial
ground.”
If you have an interest in
burial grounds please contact
the Footprint Trust for more
details or find the leaflet in
your local library.

PTES Wildlife Adventures
The Peoples Trust for Endangered
Species are offering you the
chance to experience wildlife with
the experts! Two new events, the
‘Briddlesford Wildlife Weekend’
and the ‘Briddlesford Spring
Explorer’, both taking place in
May will gain you access to their
beautiful ancient woodland at
Wootton. The first, a two day
event over the weekend of
the 7th & 8th, involves walks,
talks, hands on work shops,
mammal trapping and a ride on
the Havenstreet Steam Railway.
On Saturday 21st, there will be
a wild encounter. Explore the
SSSI woodlands, famous for it’s
rare species, such as dormice,
red squirrels and carpets of
bluebells. Tea and cakes will be
served at their woodland hut.
Watch this space, because in June
there will be the chance to join
butterfly expert, Andrew Brookes
of Butterfly Comservation on a
guided walk looking for sightings
of butterflies, such as silver
washed fritillaries, ringlets and
marbled whites. www.ptes.org
