While he was choosing his GCSE
courses, he managed to gain an
interview at the Royal Hotel with head
chef Alan Staley, who was impressed
with Connor’s enthusiasm and work,
and agreed to take him on.
Alan said: “There are not many kids
who would give up their Saturdays
to come and work in a hard kitchen
like this one. Initially we were not
even paying him; he was just coming
in because he was so keen and
interested. Then we thought it was
worth rewarding him for his efforts, but
knowing he wasn’t here for the money
was a good sign for me.
“He is showing very good potential,
and credit to Medina High School for
allowing him to come here
