The dinner is a big event on the calendar of the Islands livestock farmers and combines the celebration of Island produce with the awards presentation from the 2009 Gilten Market, which took place at Brickfields Mr Richard Denness with a host of trophies for the Champion Beast, Reserve on the 7th December. Champion, Best Exhibit from a Young IW The Gilten Market is a Farmer, Best Steer & Best Heifer in show historical event which was traditionally a Chritmas market for all forms of local produce. Following the closure of the Newport Market, in the 1980’s the venue moved to Brickfields where it is hosted by the Legge family, keeping the tradition alive. The dinner was a sell out, with Hamiltons Fine Foods providing the beef for the main meal of a four course menu. Grace and the Loyal Toast were given by David Biles, with our High Sheriff, Mrs Gay Edwards, giving the toast to the Gilten Market. Laurie Calloway responded to the toast with a vote of thanks and some comical tales for good measure before Iain Soutar, of Southern Counties Auctioneers, conducted the prize giving, with the awards being presented by Charlotte Legge with the cup for the Best Pen of Heifers the High Sheriff. The Highlight of the awards was the presentation of a new cup for the best overall entry, which was presented by John Harris, in memory of the late Phil Legge. This was a close run contest between Michael Denness, Susan Holliday and Phil’s son Matt. Susan pipped the others to the post to prove a Matt Legge with the cup for the best very popular winner. butchers lambs Visit our new website - www.visitislandlife.com
