life SOCIETY Gilten Dinner Brickfields was once again host to a well supported Gilten Market Dinner which was held on 17th January; fittingly roast beef was on the menu. The actual market was held at the beginning of December and has always been the historic Christmas market, it was traditionally held in Newport until the market place closed. Since that closure, Brickfields has hosted the market in the attempt to keep one of the Island’s traditions alive. At the market, the Gilten Beast was bought by David Biles and it made top price in the country. The beast was produced by Susan Holliday, who very deservedly won the top prize of the day. The market is lucky to have generous sponsors, good buyers, local producers and top butchers that make it successful. The dinner was followed by the presentation of awards; these were for different categories that had been judged on the day of the market. Two very good speakers then entertained the guests, the High Sheriff, Alan Titchmarsh and David Biles. The evening was an enjoyable gathering of the farming community.
