But now the Isle of Wight Pilates Centre has reached its tenth year, says Kim Davey-Sinclair, it’s time to shout about it. The state-of-the-art centre equipped with up-to-the-minute machines dedicated entirely to practicing Pilates would sit well in some of London’s swankier districts. Kim and her partner Alison Beardsall are both former dancers. Kim taught ballet before turning to fitness instructing, and Alison went into sports therapy. They hatched the idea of a Pilates centre when they trained together. They have helped train two additional teachers, and offer hour-long sessions between 9am and 9pm. The depth of their individual and collective experience is obvious when you see them working with small studio groups. Core strength, body alignment, as well as sound breathing, are key to Pilates, so they will move through the studio scrutinising the postures and exercises and gently correcting anything out of line. “Our reputation is really strong on the remedial side,” says Kim. “And our remedial work can also be sport-specific. We work with clients of all ages and conditions: this technique is so versatile and is gentle enough for both pre- and post-pregnancy. We love adapting the technique to the individual.” Every new client is assessed to discover any long-term problems or injuries, and an individual programme devised. Clients will have several one-to-one sessions to teach the technique before joining either a mat class or studio sessions. “Legally we can teach up to six, but we prefer to have four at a time in our studio sessions,” says Alison. “That way we can see problems and deal with them there and then.” The Isle of Wight Pilates Centre, Pine Barn, Long Lane, Newport Tel 530555. www.pilatescentre.co.uk Island Life - www.isleofwight.net
