Inside Business

Family business in the frame

Whether it ’ s for a valuable piece of artwork , a sentimental photograph or keepsake , or a prized certificate , the right frame can make all the difference when it comes to proudly displaying it on the wall .
That ’ s where the combined talents of a picture framer and an artist produce such great results . Father and daughter team Anthony and Laura Hathaway have created that combination at A . Hathaway Picture Framing , their framing and repair workshop in Cowes . Midlands-born former RAF man Anthony had built a successful second career as a fireman , until he was involved in a road traffic accident , and sustained injuries that ended his days in the Fire Service . However , it was this blow that led him to turn his interest in history , woodwork and art into a business , making small frames for himself and friends , and eventually enrolling on a course to learn the basics in picture framing . He went on to be trained by the first ever Fine Art Trade Guild commended framer and the Grand Master at the time , Pete Bingham - an indepth training that included highly skilled conservation techniques . After developing his skills for several years , Anthony established the business in Birmingham in 1999 moving it to the Island in 2001 and was subsequently joined in the enterprise by his artist and designer daughter Laura , whose eye for colour , composition and detail brings an added asset to the business . In their workshop at Northwood Business Park , 290 Newport Road , Northwood , they offer bespoke and contract framing , and hold a large selection of Approved Marks of Responsible Forestry wooden mouldings , pre-finished and bare woods along with a varied selection of mounts . They also create hand finished mouldings using stains , waxes , paint and gilding techniques . Their wide experience includes handling everything from watercolours , oils , textiles , pastels , fine art prints , photographs , certificates , maps , mirrors , and 3D object framing – through to medals , shirts , memorabilia and keepsakes all to conservation standards . They can also provide mount cutting and dry mounting services , canvas , embroidery and tapestry stretching , heat sealing and frame repairs . The dad and daughter duo say they are always happy to give advice and guidance on achieving the perfect frame and finish , and also offer home visits and art group visits as well as welcoming walk-in enquiries at the workshop .
