Dental crowns and you

James Spence from James Spence & Colleagues Dental Surgery in Ryde discusses 3M Stainless Steel dental crowns for adults and children .
In late 2016 our team completed an audit of our provision of Stainless Steel Crowns for molar teeth ( the chewing back teeth ). Because of the large number of children under our care we had become one of the biggest providers in England of this technology . We fitted 365 of these crowns over the 2 year audit period compared with fairly recent data showing that in England 10 dentists on average did one such crown between them in a year .
One benefit of the technique is that children who are being directed to the hospital for extractions can avoid or postpone them and regulary have the teeth saved , often without injections . An example is seen below in frame 1 .

With adults , benefits include a single visit and much lower cost . In frame 2 we see a broken tooth . frame 3 shows the Stainless steel crown fitted and protecting the tooth from further breaks , while frame 4 shows a cosmetic window in what we call a ¾ crown so that the crown is nearly invisible from the front and outside . Frames 2 , 3 and 4 are all of the same patient .
The reason that metal is used for these crowns is that it is thin and slightly flexible meaning it doesn ’ t break , so as much of the tooth as possible can be retained for maximum strength .
The child crowns are £ 90 each and the ¾ crowns for adults can be fitted for under £ 200 and we are pleased to offer a free consultation till the end of February to anybody interested in the technique .
