TRAINING HORSES with Robert Booth BHSI

As we come to the end of yet another eventful 12 months , we are delighted to report that 2016 has been a good year for us .
Grading our three year-old colt with The Anglo European Society was very exciting and then taking him over to West Kington Stud in order to get our two mares inseminated and some semen frozen for the future years breeding programme was a challenge but very rewarding . It means that 2017 will see him competing , and two foals on the ground , which is something to look forward to . We only had one horse to compete this year , Upgraded Flight who has performed and progressed very nicely , is now jumping consistently at 1.30m and turning into a very promising showjumper . The four year-old that was sold this year is also progressing well for his new owner Lucy Vale , as are some of the past Rodgebrook Horses including Mr Footings and Tina Read . It has been good keeping in touch with them and helping them in their future plans , and for those of you who remember Rydam Regis he is now jumping in Nations Cups and World Cup Qualifiers in America . I see many of the horses that we have had for breaking also coming along well . Although I have been teaching for many years , becoming a BHS
Accredited Professional Coach this year has also been a highlight , and seeing some of my pupils making the most of their lessons and going out there competing to a high level is extremely rewarding . We have some really nice young riders with good horses waiting to make their mark . Our Vectis Equestrian Club training nights are going from strength to strength and have been very well supported . Thank you to all our supporters and good luck for 2017 ! Robert Booth is an Equine trainer for Rodgebrook Horses . Telephone : 01983 521870 or visit www . rodgebrookhorses . co . uk .

Useful tips on training your horse : Cross poles

For the more experienced horse and rider a spread jump of two cross poles is a useful exercise to ensure the rider is focused and absolutely straight and in the centre of the jump . For the horse it encourages him to remain straight and not veer to the side as he jumps . It makes him stretch and get more height over the jump , and lift and fold his legs out of the way making him more careful , making the angle steeper for more difficulty .
