ANTIQUES
Clocking up the interest
Clocks, books and even an incense
pot had bidders in a frenzy at a
recent sale of antiques and fine arts
at the Island Auction Rooms in
Shanklin.
It proved their best ever sale, with
no fewer than 300 lots coming from
an Island property that had the feel
of Hogwarts! The sale generated
international interest with 10 phone
lines and fierce internet bidding.
Highlights were two rare Lantern
clocks which saw the 10 phone lines
contesting the John Knibb clock,
which eventually sold for £17,500,
with another clock selling for
£9,500.
Other big surprises included a

collection of books which sold for
£10,600, with other book lots selling
for £2,000, £3,000 and more!
A little oriental metal incense pot
bought at a car boot for just £3 sold
to a Japanese buyer for £4,000, while
a Victorian watercolour pulled from
the rubble of a building sold for
a remarkable £2,700 to an Italian
buyer.
Auctioneer Warren Riches
said: “The buzz before hand and
during the sale was incredible.
We advertised as usual nationally
and offered live bidding on the
net, but even so the response was
unbelievable.”
