Restoration back on track at Brading Photo: Right to left, Gary Stevens, Cathy Mils, Sir William Mc Alpine, Andy Savage Rail enthusiasts are pulling together to continue the restoration of Brading Railway Station. The Friends of Brading Station have been joined by Brading Town Council and other groups with rail interest, and are hoping to eventually restore the station to how it looked more than 50 years ago. There has already been extensive work, including turning the old waiting room into a café and restoring the signal box. The site was recently visited by Sir William McAlpine and Mr. Andy Savage from the Railway Heritage Trust. Sir William has a big interest in railways, being the former owner of the famous Flying Scotsman locomotive. He also has a private railway at his home, and was president of Sandown Railway Enthusiasts Club, which is based at Brading Station. The down platform buildings at Brading were inspected by Sir William and pleasing comments were received. He was then invited to Brading Signal box where he admired the ongoing interior restoration. Any items relating to Brading, St Helens or Bembridge stations are sought for display at the museum at Brading and volunteers with an interest in railways are always welcome to go along and help. Anyone can join Friends of Brading Station to assist with the project or send a donation to Brading station by contacting Gary Stevens on 01983 405046 or email gstevens101@aol. com or [email protected] Visit our new website - www.visitislandlife.com Here’s a whizzo idea, why not do all your Christmas shopping under one roof at the island’s truly independent hardware store
