reported (Issue 1, Nov/Dec 05) fell in
love with both his future wife Vivien
and the Island when he came to play
Shanklin Theatre, is sadly missed the
world over. The role he created as
bumbling, stuttering Alf Ippititimus
appeared in only the last eight of the
31 Carry On films but Jack was still
receiving fan mail when we met him,
long after Alf ’s last Carry On outing.
Our readers were touched by Jack’s
preference to accept roles only if he
and actress Vivien could work together.
We also remember Den Phillips of
Compton Farm, Brook. We featured his
farm sale when, at the age of 79 and
having lived at Compton Farm all his
life, he was beginning to take things a
little easier (Issue 9, Apr/May 07).
A shock to everyone was the untimely
death of superyacht designer Bjorn
Johansson, known for his amazing
design for Oceanco’s Y705 (Issue 13,
Dec08/Jan). His passion for boats was
beautifully expressed: “Looking at them
on waves is like staring at flames in a
fire. They roll and there are sheer and
stunning shapes from every angle.”
Tragically, shortly after he was
featured in our pages, Bjorn was killed
in a motorbike accident.
John Kingswell, well-known farmer,
past master of the Isle of Wight
foxhounds, and leading light of the
Gilten Market and the annual ploughing
match is also sadly missed.
