Island Life - December 2010
The Leverets success continues
The committee are so grateful for the support
they are receiving in raising funds for the Isle of
Wight Foot Beagles (IWFB). Their calendar for
2011 remains as busy as ever.
It will include the Young Farmers Club reunion.
A club which was started on the Isle of Wight
back in 1946 and has featured heavily in the
history of the farming community ever since.
The Leverets will also be supporting the
“Memorial Ploughing Match” on Sunday 3rd
April at Wolverton Farm. They will be organising
a Tug of War competition and a tractor & trailer
backing competition to help raise funds for the
Earl Mountbatten Hospice.
A ladies night will be held at the Old Smithy,
Godshill and “The Leverets” will be raising
funds for the IW Riding for the Disabled &
The Rheumatoid Arthritis charity. The evening
will include a fashion show, hair styling and
cosmetic makeovers and much more.
And of course you can’t forget the Barn Dance
which will be held on Saturday 9th July.
Following a most successful morning at
Headhunters, they will be continuing to
encourage the younger generation from the
farming community and those with interests in
the countryside. They have already set dates for
Countryside Demo days, a 12-hour charity fundraiser, and encouraging the young members to
come forward with their own ideas and helping
them to promote their own events.
On behalf of “The Leverets” committee they
thank you for all your support during 2010
and send you their warmest thoughts and best
wishes for a wonderful Christmas and a very
Happy New Year.

Brook A Village History
I have to admit to spending probably a little too much
time looking at old photographs and maps! I’m drawn to
the wooden hurdles, old tools and farm implements these
photos and the stories that go with them are a wonderful
and real insight into how life used to be and how the
Island looked!
The Islands latest book on ‘Brook’ and the surrounding
small hamlets of Hulverstone, Mottistone and Chessell,
has been skilfully written and put together with great
devotion, attentiveness and thought. It is packed full of
fascinating stories, photographs and memories and a real
sense of village life, showing how sustainable and close
the community was.
What would our current IW Council think about
motorbike races at Compton Beach? And how many lives
were saved at sea, because of the brave lifeboat men?
Available from shops in Brighstone, priced £14.95. Any
profit made will go towards further work in Brook Village
history project and the Seely Hall.
