Citroen C5 revisited
There are certain cars which just
want to take off, to travel, to see the
world. Fine, as long as they’ve got
the wherewithal to make that journey
pleasurable. The 2 litre Citroen C5
VTR+ is ready, willing, and equipped
for comfort which touches on the
luxurious, to go and see a bit of life.
Of course there are other upmarket
executive family cars on the market:
Mercedes and Audi have got
unequivocally luxurious cars in their
blood. Perhaps, though, that’s the
very reason for considering this sleek,
elegant estate. This car, thanks to its
internal finish and its bump-soaking
suspension, doesn’t look like a Citroen

and doesn’t feel like one. Yet for all its
serious comfort, it can’t help displaying
a little bit of French joie de vivre.
The boot space is huge. Flatten the
rear seats and you could almost live in
it. You’ll certainly fit a lot of luggage in
there. But there’s more to travel than
taking the kitchen sink. It’s about being
stress-free to enjoy yourself when you
get there.
The cockpit is pleasingly understated,
the technology – an oh-so-easy to
navigate full colour SatNav, which
switches effortlessly between that,
radio and phone – doesn’t scream at
you. Like most things in impeccable
good taste, it doesn’t make demands.
Even the move away is quiet and
subdued. It is efficient.
So far, so un-Citroen. The ride is all
about assurance as it eases into the
bends unfazed and absorbs all the
bumps the Island lays before it. But it’s
when you step on the speed you realise
this vehicle isn’t just about luxury. The
C5 enjoys itself.
