Days out Riot of colour at Mardi Gras The annual Mardi Gras in Ryde recently took place, jam-packed as usual with colour and energy, winding through the coastal town. The theme this year was ‘Reflections of India’, as 2017 marks 70 years of India’s independence. The parade featured entries from over 30 schools and community groups from all across the Island, drawing inspiration from both historical and modern representations of India. Ten of the entries that participated were part of a Heritage Lottery Funded scheme. They explored the connection the Island has with India through Queen Victoria, as she was Empress of India whilst resident at Osborne House. Over 700 performers took part in the all pedestrian parade, with dancing and singing for the crowds to enjoy. Pictures by Graham Reading 62 www.visitilife.com
