Send Summer out
in a blaze of glory
As we head through late summer
and into autumn, many garden
flowers begin to fade and our
thoughts start to turn towards the
indoors.
However there can still be plenty
of life left in the garden – in fact,
some plants offer their best show
during these late summer weeks
leading up to the first frosts.
Perennials like Rudbeckia with
its bright flowers on tall slender
stems and Dahlia with their dark
bronze foliage to contrast the
beautiful bright flowers, will make
a real impact on any garden or
patio. Then there are Salvias with
their graceful spikey blooms,
Japanese Anemones with large
single coloured flowers, Gaura
and Penstemon, all of which will
produce an abundance of bright
coloured flowers for many months
to come. Don’t forget to check
out our themed benches that
highlight plants that are at their
best now, for inspiration.
Now is also the time to think
ahead for next year’s spring display
of bulbs. Daffodils, Tulips, Crocus,
Alliums, Hyacinths, Snowdrop and
many more varieties start coming
into stock from August.

Jeffrey Garden Centres
This year’s select range from
Taylors Bulbs have been chosen
for select characteristics that
make these stand out from the
rest. Narcissus Van Sion – a new
addition – is a heritage double
daffodil that was widely used by
Capability Brown in his designs,
including here on the Island at
Appuldurcombe House where it
still grows strongly today.
Other varieties selected include
Narcissus Green Eyes – a unique
white daffodil with vivid green
centre, Tulip Paul Scherer – dark
almost Black Tulip, Tulip Dream
Touch – exotic double flowers and
Crocus Orange Monarch – a true
original, rare orange crocus. There
are many more varieties available,
but popular ones tend to sell fast,
so it’s best to plan early to avoid
disappointment.
All these plants and bulbs are
available from both our garden
centres where you can find plenty
of other shrubs, trees, pots and
planters, giftware, houseplants,
barbecues and furniture. Don’t
forget our on site cafés that
offer homemade food, cake and
refreshments served throughout
the day.
