Fashion, health & beauty All dentures have their place In this, the third report in our 2017 series about dentures. James Spence from James Spence & Colleagues Dental Surgery in Ryde discusses Cobalt – Chromium partial dentures, and how even today they can have their place in flexible treatment planning. When natural teeth are lost nowadays they often can easily be replaced with implants. 4 5 6 5 6 7 A ring shape denture design Before Mike was keen to replace the missing UR 4,5,6,7 and UL 5,6. If we had used implants and two bridge units it would have cost about £15,000 but there is an older technology of a very thin metal frame which is made to click in around the remaining teeth and in Cobalt – Chromium alloy is a comparative bargain at £660. In this example we designed-in a delicate rest tucked behind the two front teeth, in case they ever suffered from trauma. Shortly after the denture was made Mike was unfortunate to suffer trauma and one of the central front teeth was then lost. Because this eventuality had been planned at the design stage the tooth was able to be added to the metal denture in a few hours at a low cost, and the finished result is even more aesthetic than the starting position. Over the years we have made some of these metal frames in gold instead of the Cobalt alloy because the patients requested it, but they are heavier, and much more expensive. Thin metal framed dentures are a comfortable and moderately inexpensive way to replace lost Denture fitted and gap filled teeth and if you find you cannot wear your current denture, call us for a free of charge assessment visit.
