In the process , he smashed the record time set in July 2013 by Sir Ben Ainslie , by a stunning 28 minutes . Despite the unusually testing conditions with gusts of up to 40 knots , only a small percentage of the fleet retired from the race , with the overwhelming majority of competitors successfully completing the course . In fact , by 9pm there were only a handful of the back markers left on the final few miles to the finish .
