OUT & ABOUT Mardi Gras! A sunny Saturday in late June saw the Magna Carta Mardi Gras parade shimmying through Ryde, in an explosion of colour and smiling faces. Over 30 carnival entries from schools and communities told the story of Britain’s trek towards democracy with the various groups representing such significant events as Votes for Women, Peace Protestors, Gay Pride and, of course, the Magna Carta itself. Part of the nationwide ‘Parliament in the Making’ celebrations to celebrate 800 years since the sealing of the Magna Carta, the Mardi Gras was a great success, both with the participants and the hundreds of people who turned out to enjoy it all.
