EQUESTRIAN 40 years of RDA A happy and lively garden party celebration attended by over 120 people marked the 40th anniversary of RDA, the Carriage Driving for the Disabled organisation. The party, held on the first weekend in August at Barnsley Farm, courtesy of Nigel and Nicola Murgatroyd, saw visitors enjoying garden teas, as well as watching and taking part in the spectacle of the pony driving - for both disabled and able-bodied drivers. RDA, which has been operating on the Isle of Wight for the past 27 years, aims to raise funds as well as public awareness of the benefits of carriage driving for disabled people. Sue Martin, the Island branch’s head of fundraising and publicity, says: “Particularly for those people who have been horse riders before becoming disabled, it provides a marvellous experience of freedom. It can also help people suffering from depression and MS”. The Island branch is currently aiming to raise £9,000 to purchase a larger carriage, and funds raised from the garden party are expected to give a significant boost to the £1,500 raised so far.
