W orks by local artist Cavendish Morton are consistently keenly sought after and always achieve premium prices when they appear at auction. We regularly see his pieces at our valuation days, usually treasured possessions which hang in pride of place, but sometimes rather dusty discoveries from the depths of an attic; either way, clients are always pleased when they hear a valuation figure. Since he recently sadly passed away, at the incredible age of 103, it is almost certain that these prices will start to appreciate considerably and will prove a shrewd investment. Best known for his scenes of the Island and the Solent, Cavendish Morton also produced work in conjunction with the automotive and aviation industries, and the scarcity of these pieces means they are likely to command even higher prices. However, when looking to invest, keep at the forefront of your mind the style of painting you find most aesthetically pleasing. Buying what you like offers a guaranteed return on your money since every day you will enjoy the addition to your collection, and if it accrues substantially in value so much the better. Without a doubt, the fly away lot was a Middle Eastern rug which surpassed all expectations when the hammer came down at £4,500. The tribe by whom it was woven, together with its very specific design, ensured it attracted potential buyers from across the globe, and following animated bidding it has winged its way across the Atlantic to a new home in America. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and whilst ‘The Convalescent’ by Walter Langley was not necessarily a painting appealing to one and all, it certainly caught the eye of a number of discerning dealers and collectors, all attracted by its incredible detail and fine workmanship. It also demonstrated that there is still a buoyant market, both locally and internationally, for quality fine art pieces. HRD Auctions - 01983 402222 www.visitilife.com 59
