ith demand for firewood growing all the
time, there’s the potential for owners of
even small woodlands or copses to tap
into a useful extra stream of income.
According to tree specialist Matt Huxley, who runs
Brighstone-based Dryad Treework, it’s a step that
many more are investigating – and one that he can
offer expert help with.
From advice on seeking funding through the
Countryside Stewardship Scheme, to more handson assistance with woodland management, Matt’s
experience has proved invaluable to many Island
tree owners.
He says he established Dryad Treework in 2005 to
offer “sensitive tree care, sustainable environmental
improvement and a holistic approach to habitat
restoration”.
Having initially worked as an independent subcontractor for a number of well-respected local
woodland workers and tree surgeons, the business
has since grown to encompass a whole range of
woodland work, coppice restoration, forestry and
tree surgery.
With the grants system for woodland funding
having recently changed, Matt can guide owners
through the complexities of the system and then
offer more practical assistance with day-to-day
management issues such as woodland thinning,
firewood and saw-log harvesting, and wholesaling.
He also offers a private contracting service for
domestic and forestry clients all over the Island,
covering everything from hazel coppicing and
restoration to the care and maintenance of one or
two garden trees.
