& FOOD FOOD DRINK Pushing the fudge flavour boundaries T here is nothing that satisfies a sweet tooth like a piece of smooth, creamy hand-made fudge. At The Rock Shop they have a stunning selection of over 20 different flavours of fudges and truffles, from the traditional clotted cream and vanilla to the daringly different Lemon Meringue and Blueberry Cheesecake flavour fudge… All of these delicious treats are hand-made using only the finest ingredients, locally produced wherever possible. The Rock Shop are always looking to push the boundaries when it comes to flavour combinations and their hand-made fudge is no exception. They quite often take requests from their customers as to flavours they may like to try and will always do their best to make up a batch. Some of the more successful trials were Peanut Butter & Jam, Rhubarb & Custard and a rather spectacular Liquorice Allsorts fudge. They also produce some delicious Truffles, Tablets and Ices such as Traditional Butter Tablet which is a beautifully sweet, crumbly hand made fudge. There is the naughty but nice Whisky and Rum Truffles and the original Coconut and Fudge Ice. www.therockshopiow.co.uk Hot trend for Frozen Gelato W ith gelato parlours springing up in cities all along the south coast, Lisa Lee reckoned there was a big gap for one on the Isle of Wight. So she and partner Christopher Loader gave up their secure jobs on the mainland, moved across the Solent – and in July, launched Frozen Gelato in Newport. Thanks to input from Lisa’s 17 year-old college student son Sean, and daughters Carrie and Kirsty, the business is being promoted across social media and has been an instant hit with youngsters. It offers authentic Italian-style gelato, made with milk rather than cream – and the milk is locally sourced from Briddlesford Farm. The ices, all made on the premises, come in 22 flavours including sorbets, and the menu will change regularly, with a featured “new flavour of the week”. Also available is the finest Italian Isola coffee, along with crepes, waffles, milk shakes and smoothies. Lisa - a former special needs teacher who says she had always wanted to live on the Island - hopes to expand the business by offering children’s parties and themed events. “We’re really loving being here and bringing something new to Newport” she said. www.visitilife.com 113
